Achievements in KVPY

 1.    The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY), a programme initiated   by Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India to encourage students of basic sciences, engineering and medicine to take up research career in these areas.  The aim of the programme is to identify and encourage talented students to pursue research career in their chosen fields.

2.    This programme strives to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth of the country.  Under this programme, various scholarships are provided up to the pre PhD level to the selected students.  In addition to this, various talent nurture programmes, summer programme are also organised for KVPY fellows in reputed research and educational institutions of the country.

3.    KVPY programme is fully funded by Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India and it is administered by IISc, Bangalore.  The selection for basic sciences, engineering and medicine streams are carried out by IISc, Bangalore, IIT-Bombay, Mumbai and ICMR, New Delhi respectively in association with zonal centres at IISER, Kolkota, HBCSE, Mumbai, IIT(B),Mumbai & ICMR, New Delhi.

4.    The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Govt of India has entrusted overall responsibility for organising the programme in IISc, Bangalore.  The KVPY scholarships are open to all the Indian nationals studying in India.  The fellowships are offered for students studying basic sciences, engineering and medicine the detailed entry points for fellowships under the KVPY.

5       The written aptitude test for the KVPY fellowship programme is normally held in the 1st week of November every year, for which detailed guidelines along with applications form are published in the national dailies as well as made available on the KVPY website (

6      KVS, being a pace setting organisation in the field of school education should encourage its students to join this programme in large numbers.  It has been increasingly felt that the representation of students from KVs in KVPY programme is not at the desired level considering the enrolment at +2 level Science Stream.  As per the information available with us for the year 2007, only 03 students were selected under this programme, which shows a dismal picture of the KVs in a prestigious national programme.  During inter-action with the students and teachers at various platforms, it was found that students as well as teachers are not aware of this scheme.

7      To popularise this scheme among the students as well as teachers, it is expected that Assistant Commissioners and Education Officers, while visiting/inspecting the KVs should impress upon the Principals and teachers about the utility of this programme for the students and their career & growth.  There is urgent need to give wide publicity about this programme, through your intervention and well as the Principals and teachers.  The KVPY programme should be one of the component in the discussion during the in-service courses, subject-committee meetings etc.  All the students and teachers should be motivated to visit the website of KVPY ( so that they get the requisite information about the programme.
